During the ceremony, the bride and groom are accompanied to the Magul Poruwa by a group of Kandyan dancers and drummers.
Magul Poruwa (wedding platform) – a special raised stage where the ceremony is held.
Vases of flowers are placed in each corner of the Poruwa. The platform is covered with a cloth on which rice and coins are scattered; they symbolize prosperity and fertility. According to tradition, the couple exchanges betel leaves seven times, which is intended to represent a bond of love for seven generations.
The wedding bond is sealed by symbolically connecting the little fingers of the bride and groom with a golden thread, while the master of ceremonies pours water from a silver vessel over the thread and speaks words of blessing.
After the exchange of rings, the couple leaves the Poruwa. Subsequently, a coconut is smashed with a sacred sword. The splashing coconut milk is considered a sign of health and numerous offspring. Afterwards, to the sound of drums, the couple lights a traditional oil lamp as a symbol for the beginning of their life together.
