One of the most impressive areas is the collection of houseplants with around 750 species, which stand out due to their unique leaf shapes and a great variety of colors. However, the garden’s main attraction is the decorative orchids, of which there are about a hundred species. The garden is also known for its collection of 175 palm species, which not only adorn the landscape but also provide humans with food, clothing, shelter, and fuel.
In addition to decorative and useful plants, the garden features an avenue of memorial trees planted by heads of state and well-known figures who have visited Sri Lanka. The first memorial tree was planted by King Edward VII, a Bodhi tree. The second tree, a Ceylon ironwood tree, which is a national symbol of Sri Lanka, was planted in 1891 by the Russian Tsar Nicholas II. There is also a tree planted by cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin.
Many trees with unusual fruits and extraordinary flowers grow in the garden, attracting great interest from tourists. A characteristic feature of the garden are the flying foxes that hang from the trees in large groups, as well as numerous curious monkeys that can be found everywhere.
