Anuradhapura

The Bodhi tree is one of the holiest sites for millions of Buddhists worldwide. It grew from a branch of the Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya, Nepal, under which Prince Siddhartha Gautama attained enlightenment and became the Buddha. The sapling was brought to the island by the nun Sanghamitta, daughter of the Indian Emperor Ashoka, and planted in the royal park of Anuradhapura. Since the original tree in Nepal no longer exists, this tree is considered the oldest historically documented tree in the world.
