The name of the city means “top of the tent” – according to a legend, a tribal leader pitched his tent at this spot and founded the settlement. According to another legend, the Queen of Sheba stopped here on her way to King Solomon.
Thanks to its location, the emirate was once a popular base for pirates in the Persian Gulf.
Ras Al Khaimah is exceptionally picturesque: spectacular mountain landscapes, lush oases, and a typical Arabian coastline make the city unique. Watchtowers, which were once intended to protect against nomadic tribes, give the emirate a special historical atmosphere.
The city consists of two parts – the western, old Ras Al Khaimah, and the eastern district of Al-Nakheel. They are separated by a lagoon and connected by a modern bridge.
The emirate’s rich water resources are a particular source of pride.
Activities – The Al-Jazeera Aviation Club: open to anyone who wants to learn to fly or obtain a pilot’s license. Sightseeing flights offer breathtaking views over the emirate. – Hot mineral springs and the Khatt spa resort are located near the city.
Sights – The historical part of the city with semi-dilapidated forts and a mosque made of coral blocks. – The National Museum, housed in a restored 18th-century fortress. It formerly served to defend the city and as the residence of the ruling family until the 1960s. – The Al-Ain Museum with unique archaeological collections. – In the new district, there is the Emir’s palace, numerous markets, and an exhibition center. – From mid-September to the end of April, camel races take place – one of the most important traditional events, supported by the Sheikh.
Climate: The holiday season lasts all year round. The water temperature is around +17 °C. In summer (July, August) it is extremely hot – up to +50 °C in the shade. Best time to travel: October to April. Air temperature during this time: approx. +25 °C, water temperature: +20 °C.
