When swimming, some marine animals can be dangerous. To avoid unpleasant situations, the following tips should be observed. Before traveling, check whether certain animals appear seasonally – for example, jellyfish. Tour operators or news outlets often provide relevant information.
In the Maldives, one should avoid electric stingrays. In other countries, different types of jellyfish are dangerous (e.g., pink jellyfish in the Middle East, blue ones in Cuba, black ones in Tunisia). Rescue services monitor water quality and warn bathers if necessary.
Fish: Electric rays, whose sting can be life-threatening. They often bury themselves in the sand – the tail with the stinger sticks out and is easily overlooked. Many tropical fish (yellow, red, white) possess venomous spines – especially in the Red Sea. In case of injury, immediate medical help is necessary.
Diving in the Maldives can easily compete with the Red Sea or the Caribbean. Fantastic corals, countless fish species, and professional diving centers make the archipelago one of the best diving destinations in the world.
