Ayurveda is one of the oldest holistic medical systems in the world that is still practiced today. The name comes from Sanskrit and is composed of the words “Ayur” (long life) and “Veda” (knowledge). According to Ayurvedic teachings, nature and humans should be in perfect balance. Stress, suppressed emotions, poor diet, an unhealthy lifestyle, insufficient rest, and environmental pollutants lead to disturbances in this balance and cause numerous diseases. Ayurveda helps to restore this inner and outer state, as the primary goal is a comprehensive understanding of health: physical, mental, spiritual, energetic, material, and social. Ayurveda offers the opportunity to live in harmony with one’s own nature again and includes twenty classic methods of healing and health promotion.
In this medical system, every patient is viewed individually, based on their personal constitution and psychophysiological characteristics. In addition to standard diagnostic procedures, Ayurveda also uses pulse diagnosis, a very effective but complex method that requires seven years of training.
Remedies and treatments are put together individually. In Ayurvedic practice, only natural substances are used, including ghee (clarified butter), around three thousand plants and spices that grow in India, as well as minerals and metals. Therefore, these remedies have no harmful side effects. Common treatment methods include various types of massages, with oils or medicinal herbs processed into powder, as well as steam baths.
The most important task of Ayurveda is to maintain health and enable people to live a long life into old age without age-related ailments. Ayurvedic treatments have no side effects and are recognized worldwide today as a form of therapy, rejuvenation, and a healthy lifestyle.

According to Indian philosophy, the universe consists of five basic, unchanging elements: earth, water, fire, air, and ether (space). These five eternal elements also form the human body in various combinations. Every cell of the body contains properties of these elements. From their combination arise the three basic life principles or energy forms, which are called “Tridosha” in Sanskrit: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.
This principle is considered the most important of the three doshas, as it controls the functions of all other doshas. Vata controls movement, breathing, and natural bodily functions. It regulates the structure of tissues, motor processes, and sensations. It also influences anxiety, pain, restlessness, and cramps. Vata is primarily located in the colon, the pelvic area, the bones, the skin, the ears, and the thighs. An excess accumulates in these areas.
The main function of this dosha is the building of the body. It provides stability and energy and regulates sexual needs. Emotionally, Kapha stands for attachment, greed, envy, as well as the need for rest, forgiveness, and love. Kapha is located in the chest area, throat, head, oral and nasal cavities, stomach, joints, protoplasm, plasma, and mucus secretions.
The central function of Pitta is the support of metabolism and the maintenance of hormonal balance. Pitta regulates body temperature. Its other tasks include intellect, skin color, luster of the eyes, and physique. Emotionally, Pitta stands for anger, hatred, envy, and jealousy. It is located in the small intestine, stomach, sweat glands, blood, adipose tissue, eyes, and skin.
Ayurveda defines health as the balance of the three doshas. This balance must be maintained throughout life in harmony with the laws of nature. Causes of imbalances can be natural (climate change, times of day and seasons) or artificial (poor diet, stress, bad habits). Natural disturbances are easy to fix, often even without treatment. However, inappropriate behavior and diet destroy harmony and lead to diseases. Through suitable methods, one can harmonize the doshas and prevent diseases. Ayurveda places great importance not only on healing but also on prevention.
Observation of physical characteristics and symptoms: physique, weight, condition of hair and skin, eye color, tongue, behavior, overall impression.
Questioning the patient to determine the dosha imbalance.
Pulse diagnosis, palpation, percussion, and auscultation.
